Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcanic mountain in the Gregory Rift, south of Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Arusha Region, holds sacred significance in the Maa language, known as the Maasai Language, revered as the “Mountain of God.” Part of the volcanic system of the great East African Rift Valley, Ol Doinyo Lengai is renowned for its production of Natrocarbonatite lava, a highly fluid substance containing minimal silicon, setting it apart from other lavas.
Upon reaching the summit crater, visitors are treated to awe-inspiring panoramas, with the salt base of Lake Natron extending northward, adorned by the vibrant pink hue of flamingos inhabiting the area. At the same time, the border of Kenya looms beyond. To the east, the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro captivates the gaze.
At the same time, lush forested hills and steep escarpments characterize the western scenery, forming part of the Great African Rift Valley’s western slopes. To the south lies the breathtaking Crater Highlands of Ngorongoro, renowned as a premier destination for wildlife conservation in Africa.
After an early morning breakfast, depart Moshi or Arusha city and transfer to Lake Natron campsite; the transfer takes around seven hours. Once you arrive, you will be able to freshen up at the camp and then visit NgareSero’s amazing Waterfalls, which go downhill to the west of Lake Natron Nguruman Escarpment. Then, we will return to the center for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, you will depart camp and go to Lake Natron, an alkaline lake serving as the prime breeding place for Lesser Flamingoes. The ones that make a home here are almost three-quarters of the flamingo world’s population. After enjoying the Lake Natron tour, you will return to the camp to get the required rest before trekking up the Mountain around midnight.
Climbing to Ol doinyo legal Mountain will start at midnight, and it will take approximately six hours until you reach the peak, just in time to witness the remarkable sunrise as its lights illuminate the Great Rift Valley.
During your trekking to Ol doinyo legal, you will be escorted by a well-experienced and native Maasai guide. After exploring the stunning view at the peak of Ol doinyo legal mountain, you will descend the Mountain, where you’ll meet your driver for a transfer back to the camp to freshen up and get a well-deserved rest.
Afterward, we will drive back to Arusha or Moshi City through Ngare Sero Maasai village, where you can visit the Maasai bomas and experience their ways of life.
