Tanzania Mountain Climbing Destination
Ol Doinyo Lengai, referred to as the “Mountain of God” in the Maa tongue (the language of the Maasai people), stands as a dynamic volcanic presence within the Gregory Rift, nestled to the south of Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Arusha Region. This mountain holds immense cultural significance for the Maasai people, who consider it a sacred site. Ol Doinyo Lengai mountain is part of the volcanic system of the great East African Rift Valley, and it distinctively produces Natrocarbonatite lava. This highly fluid lava is much more relaxed than other lavas and contains practically no silicon.
Reaching the summit of Ol Doinyo Lengai, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas. To the north, the expansive salt expanse of Lake Natron stretches into the distance, adorned by a multitude of pink-hued flamingos gracing its shores. Further beyond, the border with Kenya comes into view. To the east, the commanding presence of Mount Kilimanjaro, while to the west, the lushly wooded escarpments and the myriad of hills that grace the western flanks of the Great African Rift Valley captivate your gaze. In the southern direction, the Crater Highlands of Ngorongoro, a renowned haven for African wildlife conservation, unfold in all their natural splendor.
Climbing Mount Meru requires more technical skill than climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. On the fourth day of your trek, you’ll have the chance to see various wildlife, including buffalo, antelopes, giraffes, and baboons. You’ll also pass beautiful waterfalls and unique Meru streams. To ensure your safety, a park ranger will accompany your group.
Overall, Mount Meru offers a beautiful and less crowded trekking experience for those seeking to explore Tanzania’s natural beauty. While it may not reach the extreme altitudes of Kilimanjaro, it remains a rewarding adventure with its unique landscapes and stunning views from the summit. Trekkers often find that combining a Mount Meru climb with a Kilimanjaro expedition creates an enriching and comprehensive experience of Tanzania’s mountainous terrain and diverse ecosystems.
This 4-day ascent of Mt. Meru provides stunning vistas and picturesque trails for nature lovers. As Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, it demands more technical expertise than Kilimanjaro.
